Louise Balkwill – Chatterbox
“…a top contender for Vocal Album of the Year.” – Bebop Spoken Here
Award-winning jazz vocalist Louise Balkwill makes her debut at Peggy’s Skylight with music from her new album Chatterbox — a vibrant celebration of classic swing, original songwriting and the art of vocalese.
Blending timeless standards with fresh, personality-filled arrangements, Chatterbox showcases Louise’s love of storytelling, groove and melody. The album has already drawn praise from UK Jazz News -(“Unashamedly melodic, swinging and good-humoured”) and Bebop Spoken Here (“This is rather special…”), with further national press and radio support building momentum.
At the heart of this music is Louise’s flair for vocalese — crafting original lyrics to iconic instrumental solos — alongside playful, heartfelt original compositions rooted in the warmth of the swing era while speaking to contemporary audiences. Expect cinematic ballads, effervescent up-tempo swing, and intimate moments where lyric and melody take centre stage.
For this special Peggy’s Skylight debut, Louise performs in a quartet setting with Rob Barron (piano), Theo Malka-Wishart (double bass) and Joshua Walker-Martin (drums). This acoustic line-up brings clarity and closeness to the music, highlighting the interplay between voice and trio — from smoky late-night textures to sparkling, rhythm-driven numbers that lift the room.
With her signature blend of elegance, wit and emotional honesty, Louise creates performances that feel both polished and personal. Chatterbox is music made to be experienced live — to swing, to smile, and to savour — and this debut promises an evening of warmth, exuberance and irresistible jazz storytelling in Peggy’s intimate setting.
“Louise Balkwill is quite a singer, with a great band — no wonder she’s taking Europe by storm” – Bebop Spoken Here
