JSPHYNX
“A trusted sideman for Alfa Mist and corto.alto, trumpeter JSPHYNX (Johnny Woodham) sharpens, following his 2023 album Reflex, his blend of UK jazz and jungle: dark basslines, feverish breaks, euphoric keys, soaring flugelhorn.” – Qwest TV
JSPHYNX – Is a high energy, dance influenced, jazz fusion 4-piece led by London based trumpet/flugelhorn player and composer, Johnny Woodham (Alfa Mist, Corto Alto). The music is a blend of jazz fusion, jungle and UK bass — “dark basslines, feverish breaks, euphoric keys and soaring flugelhorn”, as described by Qwest TV. Hailing from the coastal town of Broadstairs (Kent), Johnny is a talented trumpet player, who cut his teeth performing alongside the likes of Alfa Mist, Corto Alto, Barney Artist, Ego Ella May, Rex Orange County, Tom Misch, Loyle Carner, Ashley Henry, Tertia May, Subculture & Maisha.
JSPHYNX released his debut album in 2023, finding inspiration during lockdown. With an impressive roster of musicians on board (including Rudi Creswick on bass duties, and Richard Spaven on drums) label boss Alfa Mist adopting the role of executive producer, ‘REFLEX’ is positioned at the sonic intersection of UK Jazz & Bass music. First single ‘Shake’ features Alfa Mist on vocal duties, painting a story of a protagonist choosing to respond to their environment by getting stronger and more resilient. Accompanied by moody breaks, eerie keys and punctuated by ghostly trumpet motif it’s a truly immersive introduction to the record. On the flip, ‘Palmers’ channels a focussed and driving energy, featuring hypnotic and captivating elements used to incredible effect.
HIs recent EP ‘Hold On‘ was released in July this year. Soweto Kinch called lead single ‘Cash 4 Gold’ a track that creates “an incredible feeling of motion,” while BBC 6 Music’s Rivca praised it as music that makes “different worlds collide,” awarding it a 9.5 on the station’s Roundtable. Where ‘Cash 4 Gold‘ traced a lineage and ‘Flows‘ opened a space to improvise, ‘Hold On‘ closes the record on its most direct note. The title track is written for JSPHYNX’s father, capturing a feeling of loss and grief. An earlier working title was ‘Hold On, Don’t Go.’ That directness sits against the rest of the EP’s range. Opener ‘Cowie B,’ featuring Tarju Le’Sano, is built on one of the earliest basslines JSPHYNX ever wrote, and has been road-tested live for years with drummer Nathan Shingler. ‘Interlude,’ featuring Michael Underwood and Eddie Lee, offers a moment of lyrical calm.
