Andrés Vial
“…the audience at the sold-out gig knew they were in for a treat…and what a brilliant gig it was.” – Joanne Shurvell, FORBES
Andrés Vial (pronounced Vee-al) is a pianist, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Montreal. He has performed with Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, Billy Harper, Peter Bernstein, Craig Handy, Ingrid Jensen, Malika Tirolien (Bokanté/Snarky Puppy), Ivan Neville (The Neville Brothers), Dezron Douglas, Eric McPherson, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Danton Boller (Roy Hargrove Quintet), Ira Coleman, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Bah and many others.
Active as a leader and sideman, he has played at over 50 festivals and hundreds of venues around the world. He has released 9 albums as a leader, including the Juno-nominated trio albums “Gang of Three” and “When Is Ancient?”. “Gang of Three” was also selected as a 2020 Downbeat Editor’s Pick and Top Ten Critic’s Pick by both Cadence Magazine and Jazz Weekly.
In 2023, he became the first Montréal pianist and composer to record for Blue Note Records, appearing on Joe Chambers’ album “Dance Kobina”. He contributed two originals to the album, including the title track.
His original music draws inspiration from jazz, popular music, his South American heritage, as well as African and European art music. His trio concerts feature a mix of his modern jazz original compositions alongside Great American Songbook standards and compositions by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and others.
Andrés’ music can be heard regularly on radio stations around the globe including NPR, BBC, France Inter, CBC and SiriusXM.
He holds a doctorate (DMUS) in jazz piano performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. In addition teaching at McGill, he has given jazz piano masterclasses at Dartmouth College, Vanier College and UQAM. He has contributed articles about jazz and improvisation to Downbeat Magazine and Cumulus Press. He also composes music for film and contemporary dance.
