Peggy’s Spotlight

“The event’s mission is to shine a light on homegrown talent giving them a chance to shine on a stage that feels like home…” – Iulia Teodora Matei, Leftlion

We’re back with another Spotlight event, welcoming early-career musicians to the stage! This month, we have a fantastic double header, featuring the Sophie Speed Quintet, performing original compositions rooted in the rich tradition of jazz with a fresh, contemporary edge, followed by Nottingham’s Louis Chapman Quintet, playing a selection of Louis’ original music alongside some jazz standards.

Sophie Speed Quintet

Inspired by Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson, Cannonball Adderley, Jan Garbarek and Brian Blade’s Fellowship band, The Sophie Speed Quintet play original compositions rooted in the rich jazz tradition but with a distinctive contemporary edge  – where the energy and tradition of swing are blended with the spacious, atmospheric freedom of spiritual jazz.

Sophie Speed is a Northumberland born saxophonist and composer now based in York. Alongside her quintet, Sophie plays frequently in bands such as The Tom Sharp Jazz Orchestra, Ferg’s Imaginary Big band and NYJO. Sophie has played at legendary jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s, The Vortex, Konzerthaus -Berlin and The Domicil – Dortmund.

The Quintet brings together some of the finest improvisatonal talents of the north of England – featuring members of Ancient Infinity Orchestra and Jamil Sheriff’s Five Gold Rings – expect a showcase of bop-infused original writing and organic ensemble interplay.

Line-up
Sophie Speed – Tenor Sax
Alex Fisher – Alto Sax/Tenor Sax
Jamil Sheriff – Piano

Louis Chapman Quintet

Nottingham-born drummer Louis Chapman, 21, is a final year Jazz Music student at the renowned Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich, London, a course which also produced drummers Femi Koleoso and Moses Boyd. Since moving to London, Louis has performed at Ronnie Scott’s, Vortex and Soho Theatre amongst others, appeared at festivals such as Cross the Tracks and We Out Here, has performed for recording artists such as Goya Gumbani and contemporary jazz ensemble The Axl Group, and appeared on several live sessions at Maida Vale for BBC Radio 2’s Romesh Ranganathan. He has played live and recorded for several Nottingham-based artists  and had his first live performance under his own name at Peggy’s in 2024. Returning to Peggy’s for a second time, Louis has again invited a number of his exceptionally talented contemporaries from Trinity Laban to join him to play some of his original music and selected standards.
