Matt Ratcliffe’s ‘Unity’
Unity are a Hammond organ quartet in the mode of classic bands from the 1960’s. Jazz organists such as Larry Young, Jimmy Smith, ‘Big’ John Patton, Lonnie Smith, ‘Brother’ Jack McDuff and Jack McGriff defined a sound that would lead the way to soul jazz, fusion, and the funk and groove of the 1970’s. The Hammond sound took the gospel of the church and brought it to the club!
Unity play burning tempo modal workouts, swinging blues, gospel shouts and Latin-infused grooves that are encapsulated in compositions like, Moontrane, Loose Foot, Back Up, Snap Back Jack and Do It Now!
Line up: Matt Ratcliffe – Hammond organ Tobie Carpenter – guitar Nadim Teimoori – tenor saxophone Jim Bashford – drums
