Spiritual Jazz Flute | Chip Wickham - "Blue To Red"
Friday 9th, April
8:00pm
8:00pm - 10:00pm
Music from the musical film arranged and performed by the Ben Martin Quartet
Singin' In The Rain was Ben’s ‘gateway drug’ into jazz and The Great American Songbook. The brilliant songs of Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown and Betty Comden and Adolph Green are known the world over, none more so than the title song and Gene Kelly’s renowned tap dance routine.
Rather than just play the songs as they are Ben has rearranged them and imagined them in the styles of jazz legends such as Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington and contemporary musicians like Joshua Redman and the Marsalis family.
The film is a hilarious send up of the change from silent movies to talkies and numbers like Make ‘em Laugh, Fit As A Fiddle and All I Do Is Dream Of You are treated in a playful manner while the epic Broadway Melody is a jazz suite within itself. Singin’ In The Rain appears in many guises throughout and the beautiful ballads You Were Meant For Me and You Are My Lucky Star come in for the full jazz treatment. The fantastic up tempo numbers Good Morning and Moses Supposes round off a great set of songs from a fabulous band
If you’re a fan of the film then it’ll be a treat
If not you’ll want to watch it as soon as you get home...
