Music, Meze & More with Thom Whitworth Trio
Thursday 18th, July
7:00pm - 12:00am
Merrell//Norris//Pearce are a young, dynamic jazz trio currently studying at three of London’s most prestigious conservatoires. Steeped in the tradition of straight-ahead jazz, and with a particular interest in the music of Lennie Tristano and his associates, the group tackles classic repertoire and original music in an open, exploratory chordless setting. Adam Merrell (drums), and Sam Norris (alto sax) have been performing together around London and the East Midlands for around two years, with stalwart of the young London scene Harry Pearce (bass) joining them for the last year or so. Hence, the three musicians have a strong musical chemistry, allowing for an unhindered musical dialogue rife with unexpected twists and turns. Collectively, the band have been fortunate to work with and study under some of the UK and Europe's most exciting jazz musicians, including Gareth Lockrane, Andrew Wood, Dino Massa, Stefan Melovski and Sam Braysher.
At their Peggy’s debut, the trio will present a varied program of music inspired by the creative output of Lennie Tristano and his two best known students, Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, attempting to capture their freewheeling, spontaneous and often surprising approach to improvised music. As well as the compositions of Tristano and his associates, their set will include unique takes on songs by composers as diverse as Victor Schertzinger and Tchaikovsky, while also featuring original compositions by the band that continue and expand upon the principles of the Tristano philosophy.
