Joshua Jaswon Octet
‘impeccably performed…a powerful soundtrack for desperate times’Gramophone 4* Album Review, January 2021
‘much to admire in this striking new recording from the Joshua Jaswon Octet’
London-born saxophonist and composer Joshua Jaswon has undergone something of a transformation over the past three years. Following Britain’s 2016 BREXIT referendum vote Joshua took the decision to leave London for Berlin and set about establishing himself in Europe’s creative hub and heartbeat. This journey of musical discovery has led to collaborations with artists from Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen and the formation of the Joshua Jaswon Octet.
Nominated by BBC Music as one of the best jazz recordings of 2020/21, the octet’s critically acclaimed debut album Silent Sea is lyrical, intensely rhythmic and steeped in the magic of storytelling. Featuring the phenomenal Dutch vocalist Anna Serierse, the octet will tonight be performing music from Silent Sea and their upcoming Ubuntu release Polar Waters, alongside distinct interpretations of Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. For fans of Wynton Marsalis, Metropole Orchestra and Kenny Wheeler, this is an evening not to be missed.
‘Berlin-based sax player, composer and band leader, employs the full range of textural possibilities which this multinational band offers’
‘….the octet deftly combines driving jazz with lyrical condemnation…’
