Celebrating Sir GEORGE SHEARING with Shear Brass, featuring James Pearson on piano
“An absolute treat for all music lovers everywhere” – JOOLS HOLLAND
Led by Sir George Shearing’s great nephew, drummer Carl Gorham, and featuring the Artistic Director of Ronnie Scott’s James Pearson
on piano, ‘Shear Brass’ brings a fresh and dynamic new approach to one of Britain’s greatest ever jazz musicians and composers.
Combining the punch of a big band with the intimacy of a small group, this hard swinging, highly melodic outfit showcases some of the UK’s most gifted soloists. Whether reinterpreting classics such as ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ and ‘Conception’ or reintroducing lesser-known tunes such as ‘How’s Trix’ and ‘I’ll be Around’, its richly varied live show mirrors Shearing’s own development, encompassing swing, be- bop, cool and Latin jazz, topped off with some of the most celebrated vocal numbers of the 20th century.
‘Shear Brass’ also features Derek Nash, Alec Dankworth and Sarah Moule amongst an array of Britain’s finest musicians whose credits include Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Nile Rogers, Dave Brubeck, Gregory Porter, Tom Jones, Joss Stone and many more.
Shearing compositions have been recorded by artists such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole. Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey and Peggy Lee. Perhaps the most famous, ‘Lullaby of Birdland’, was composed in 20 minutes on the back of a napkin.
The show is compered by drummer Gorham who brings a unique perspective to proceedings, fusing family history and biography with the music, all laced with some of the trademark Shearing wit.
‘Celebrating Sir George Shearing’ is an enthralling, surprising and uplifting celebration of the man and his legacy, a fascinating musical journey that combines personal anecdote with some of the greatest jazz tunes ever.
Shear Brass’ debut album “Celebrating Sir George Shearing” is available on Ubuntu Records via Amazon and at all live shows. For more information on Shear Brass go to carlgorham.com/music
