Hammerhead is a celebration of the irresistibly groove soaked and melody driven music which came to prominence in the late 50s/early 60s, the golden era of hard bop and Blue Note Records.
Leading a 6 piece band, the group is fronted by jazz drummer Andrew ‘Woody’ Wood (Peggy’s House Band, Tony Kofi’s Inside Straight, Sharp Little Bones), featuring leading lights of the Midlands scene joining forces with some of the finest instrumentalists in the UK: Chris Bowden (Tenor Saxophone), Magnus Hawker-French (Trombone), Josh Short (Trumpet), Paul Deats (Piano), Martyn Spencer (Double Bass).
The sextet explores compositions by Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and other figureheads of the 60s hard bop revolution, as well as contemporary compositions penned in this authentic style. Expect an evening of fiery, soulful and intense music presented by this exciting new project!
